Penn Oktoberfest is Back!

We're looking forward to continuing with Pittsburgh's classic Oktoberfest celebration the weekends of September 17-19 and 24-26. Stay tuned for more details!

Countdown to Oktoberfest Kickoff

Thursday, August 19 at Penn's Northside location

Since we were not able to celebrate Oktoberfest properly last year, we are especially excited to welcome you back to this year’s Fest! To get us into the spirit, we’ll be kicking off Penn’s official Countdown to Oktoberfest by tapping this year’s first keg of Penn Oktoberfest beer, AND running a traditional steinholding competition on Thursday, August 19 at 7 pm at Penn’s Northside location. Winners will earn a $50 Penn gift card and a spot at Pennsylvania’s statewide stein holding championship competition scheduled for October 10 in Bethlehem, PA*

What is Steinholding?

Steinholding is a traditional Bavarian strength contest in which competitors hold a filled one-liter beer stein (or Masskrug/Mass in German) out in front of their bodies with a straight arm, parallel to the ground. Contestants must maintain fully upright body posture, with their arm consistently outstretched, while holding the stein. The contestant who holds their stein for the longest time wins the competition.

Some things to know:

  • We’ll hold one competition for men and one for women

  • Our judges will utilize the official rules as established by the Official US Steinholding Association. (See rules)

  • *Winners of Penn’s competition may, but are not obligated to, participate in the Pennsylvania State Championship in Bethlehem on October 10. Should Penn’s winners opt to participate, travel and related expenses to compete in Bethlehem tournament are the responsibility of the guest. See the details of Pennsylvania State Steinholding Championship.

Register Now!

  • There is no cost or required purchase to compete, but you must register in advance using the online registration form. Registration is first come, first served and is capped at 30 participants for each competition. Participants will be asked to sign a liability release.

If you don’t want to enter the contest, please come and cheer on the competitors – and enjoy the season’s first taste of Penn Oktoberfest beer! Prost!
