Penn Brewery History

The history of Penn Brewery making great German beers began with Tom Pastorius' great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather, Franz Daniel Pastorius. Today considered the father of German-Americans, Franz Daniel Pastorius was an idealistic scholar who studied at five European universities, earned a doctor of laws degree, wrote many books, more than 2000 poems and could read, write and speak seven languages.

A friend of William Penn, Franz Daniel Pastorius lead the first group of German settlers to America in 1683 and founded Germantown, Pennsylvania. He dined frequently with Penn and enjoyed the beer brewed in Penn's brewery at Pensbury Manor. The Pastorius family has been drinking Pennsylvania beer ever since, for ten generations.

Franz Daniel Pastorius provided Germany with an accurate description of Pennsylvania (Umständige geographische Beschreibung der zu allerletzt erfundenen Provintz Pennsylvania, etc.), a collection of letters and reports sent to his father and published by the latter in book form.

Tom and Marybeth Pastorius established the Pennsylvania Brewing Company in 1986. Known as "Penn Brewery," the company is committed to brewing authentic German beers and is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the former Eberhardt and Ober Brewery.
